How we write and check these guides

The Learn library is a free, plain-language reference for pilots. This page explains where its facts come from, how they are checked, and what the guides are and are not for.

Who writes it

The guides are written and maintained by the Pilot EFB team at Azimuth Labs Ltd, the UK company behind the Pilot EFB app. They grow out of the same research we do to build the app's weather, NOTAM, flight-time-limitation, logbook, and descent-planning features: to present this material in an app, we first have to understand the source documents in detail, and the guides are that understanding written down.

Where the facts come from

Every guide is written from the governing primary sources for its subject: ICAO annexes and procedure documents, EASA and FAA regulations and handbooks, national AIPs, and WMO guidance for meteorology. Each article lists the documents it draws on in its "Sources and further reading" section, so you can check what we say against the authority rather than taking our word for it.

One caveat, because it is worth being straight about: not every primary source is free to read. ICAO sells most of its annexes and manuals, so a citation to one of them points at a storefront rather than at the text. Where a guide rests on a document like that, it also cites a freely readable source that carries the same fact, so every article has at least one link you can open and check for yourself without buying anything.

How guides are checked

  • Claims, thresholds, and definitions are checked against the governing source before publishing, and corroborated against independent references rather than a single document.
  • Figures and worked examples are recomputed from the rules, not copied from other summaries.
  • The library is re-audited against its sources on a rolling basis, and guides are corrected when regulations or source documents change. Each article carries the date it was published.
  • The library carries no advertising, sponsored content, or affiliate links.

What the guides are not

The guides are general reference material. They are not flight instruction, operational advice, or a substitute for official publications, your national aviation authority's requirements, or your operator's procedures. Rules differ between jurisdictions and change over time; always verify against the current official source before relying on anything for a real flight.

Corrections
