NOTAMs

Read an airport's NOTAMs raw and decoded, watch a FIR's enroute notices, map them, and get alerted to new critical ones - gaps stated honestly.

NOTAMs in Pilot EFB live where you already look for an airport: open a watched station from the Brief tab's Stations mode and the workbench's NOTAMs tab holds its full list, decoded and searchable. A watched FIR adds a region's enroute notices to the same watch-list, and NOTAM alerts can tap you on the shoulder when something new and critical appears. The line at the foot of every NOTAM screen - "May be incomplete - verify officially." - is the module's standing framing.

Read an airport's NOTAMs

  1. On the Brief tab, switch to Stations and tap a watched airport - the Weather chapter covers building the watch-list.
  2. The workbench opens on its segment strip; swipe the strip and tap NOTAMs.
  3. The list loads with a search box, category filters with live counts, and a sort control - Relevance ranks operationally important notices first, Soonest orders by time, Category groups like with like.

The group header is the honesty ledger for the whole list: an active count, an affected summary (which runways, taxiways, navaids and frequencies are touched), and a source pill - "NOTAM Management System" with the exact fetch time, its age pill turning amber once the fetch is over an hour old. Stale lists refresh themselves when you return to them, and a Refresh NOTAMs button at the foot of the list does it on demand.

Cards lead with a plain-language headline and a priority tier - the raw text is always right there.

Each card follows the same anatomy, decoded above the raw and never instead of it:

  • A plain-language headline - "Runway", "Obstacle - erected", "Taxiway B, E, F - closed" - derived from the notice so you can triage at a glance.
  • A priority tier - CRITICAL, HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW - with the card's edge stripe matching, and time badges like ACTIVE NOW or IN FORCE - SEE SCHEDULE.
  • Affected-surface chips - RWY 09L/27R, TWY B - detected from the text; tapping one filters the list to that surface.
  • The raw text verbatim, with the built-in keyword tiers bolding what matters (more on those below).
  • Show details expands the full decode in place: the RAW block, the validity window, the origin, the Q-line and any vertical limits.

Tapping a card's body marks it seen - it tucks into a compact one-line row so the unread notices stand out, and a second tap brings it back. An expanded card can also be shared as an image; anything exported carries its own framing verbatim: "Exported from Pilot EFB · Informational only. Verify with official NOTAM authorities before any operational decision."

Decode one NOTAM

A NOTAM alert lands you on the notice's own page - the same full decode as an expanded card, with the raw text always in view.

The decode names every field it read - and the source line and footer stay with it.

The decode walks the notice's own structure: validity (effective from and to, any D) schedule with its recurring active window drawn on a timeline, and when the notice was last updated), origin, the Q-line (FIR, Q-code, traffic, purpose, levels, coordinates and radius), and any F)/G) vertical limits kept verbatim - never unit-converted. Where a value was not published, the app says so - "no specific area", "default - not published" - rather than inventing one.

Each airport also keeps a 30-day NOTAM history on your device as you check it - the flight workspace links it from its NOTAM section, with notices that were amended while in history flagged as such.

See them on a map

The map icon on a group header plots every located NOTAM around the field; the Map action on a single card does the same for one notice.

Two honesty details are built into the drawing. The chart key separates "Partly closed" from "Named, not closed" - a notice that merely mentions a runway never paints it closed. And the map carries its limits in writing: "May be incomplete - verify officially. Not for navigation", with the basemap's sources credited beneath.

Watch a region's enroute NOTAMs

Airport lists cover the field; a watched FIR covers the airspace between them - GNSS jamming areas, airspace reservations, enroute navaid outages.

  1. On the Stations watch-list, tap the + button and choose Add a FIR NOTAM.
  2. Search by code or name - "EGTT" and "London" find the same FIR - and tap the result to watch it.

NOTAM alerts

Settings > Notifications > NOTAM alerts turns the watch into notifications: when a new critical or high NOTAM appears at a watched location, the app tells you - even closed, via push, once you are signed in. The screen says exactly what that involves: the device's push token and watched codes are stored so alerts can reach you, and turning the switch off stops them.

The watched list assembles itself - every row shows why it is there, and mutes with one switch.

The watched list needs no setup: your home base, Brief airports, favourites, station watches and watched FIRs each add a row, labelled with its reason. An alert-only watch covers a location you want alerts for without watching it anywhere else. Muting a row silences it without touching your data - the NOTAMs themselves stay visible everywhere. Quiet hours live one screen up on the Notifications hub, where non-urgent reminders wait until they end.

Pro Viewing NOTAMs stays free and unlimited for any airport or FIR - the Pro line is alert monitoring. Free alerts cover one location; alerting on every location you watch, and per-location alert levels, belong to Pro. Muting is never gated, and silencing a location frees its slot.

Highlight what matters

Settings > Briefing, weather & NOTAMs > NOTAM keywords controls the bolding inside every raw text. The built-in set is tiered: closure terms (CLSD, U/S, DO NOT USE) get the strongest wash, hazard terms (CRANE, UAS, FIREWORKS) a lighter one, and facility names (ILS, TWR, PAPI) plain bold - plural forms match too.

Add your own terms - your runway, your approach - and they bold everywhere NOTAM text shows.

Custom keywords make the set yours: add "09L" or "ILS CAT" and they bold in every NOTAM, matched case-insensitively on word boundaries, up to 50 terms. Highlighting is presentation only - switch it off and the notices render as plain text, unchanged.

NOTAMs on iPad

On iPad the station workbench spreads out: all six segments sit in one strip, and the cards use the full width - same anatomy, same framing.
